Scruffy-A 3 yr. old Jack Russell Terrier

I can't say enough about the DPS service. I found "Bagel" on their website and hoped she was the right dog for us. Our 10-year-old Jack Russell mix died last year of congestive heart failure. After fifteen months it was time to get another dog.

I sent many e-mails back and forth asking questions about "Bagel's" character. All my questions were answered kindly, with patience and enthusiasm. We have two homes, one in North Las Vegas and one in North Carolina and a motor home to go in between them. We had to have a dog with adventure in her soul, a great traveler unafraid of riding in vehicles of any kind, and she had to be active enough to get us off the couch and walking again.

DPS came through with much reassurances that "Bagel" was the girl for us. They brought her to us and even though she'd been a real brat the day before at another house, apparently she was just acting up to get to us. She's been the perfect girl for us.

We have all settled in and "Bagel" whom we renamed "Scruffy" (we think that was her original name since she answers to it) loves her Mommy and Daddy like she's lived with us forever. She's bonded with both of us and gives love away with all four paws. She's right by our side day and night. One or the other, it makes no difference to her. She gets my husband up and moving in the morning and me going for a long walk in the evenings with our neighbor and her two shih tzu's. I even lost a pound last week. Good going, Scruffy.

We could have paid $800 and got a "for sure" purebred and registered Jack Russell puppy and would have had to go through house training, teething, puppy exuberance and have to wait 6-8 months to go for serious walks. But why should we when we can rescue a dog who deserves to live and she's turning out to be the perfect dog for us...ready-made. She's leash trained, house trained, ready for adventure and already loves to ride in the car.

Again, I can't thank DPS enough for hooking us up with our Scruffy girl. We love her to death, she's the perfect dog.

  1. Jack Russell's are not for the faint of heart. As Scruffy's folks will tell you, they are quick as a whip and brighter than any honor student you'll meet. And when you meet a good JRT, well, you're sold. That's how we felt about Bagel, even though we knew we'd have to find a home that would appreciate her intelligence and her keen mind that was always thinking one step ahead.

From the moment Scruffy's folks opened the door with treats ready and waiting, and a firm, "Sit" to win a treat, we knew that this was her home. The day before she jumped on the formal dining room table to the horror of the family meeting her. She growled and acted as if she was a Jack Russell Terrorist. But not at this home....She walked in, took some treats, sniffed around and decided to make herself at home...and at home she is now.

Thank you for giving Bagel/Scruffy the home we always knew was out there for her and for loving her as she is but also letting her know that there's lots of adventures waiting for her so she has lots to look forward to in life...We love you Bagel and we miss you. We drove out of the driveway that day with tears pouring down our face because we knew she was where she was suppose to be all along....
